Two Million Mile Safe Drivers

Driving as a career is something that came a little later for DSR Walter Wright. Raised on a farm, he worked there for years growing various crops, including peanuts, corn and soy beans. He moved on to working in construction, but found it took him away from home too frequently. After some careful consideration, Walter decided to pursue a career as a professional driver, and said he finds Con-way Freight to be the best company for which he has driven.

“Con-way Freight is a good, stable company and I feel that they treat us well,” said Walter. “You’re your own boss in many ways, and there isn’t anybody looking over your shoulder all day. You just need to make sure you get from Point A to Point B safely, and on time.”

Walter credits his impressive safety record of reaching two million miles without an accident to patience, staying alert and being aware of his surroundings at all times. He says he is definitely proud of his achievement.

“It took me 21 years to reach two million miles,” said Walter. “I wouldn’t say I was necessarily thinking about it all the time as a big goal, I just strive to do my best every day. The way I see it, Con-way Freight is paying me to be a safe driver and in order to do that I need to be alert and take care of their equipment because to me, that’s part of my job.”

A resident of Santa Claus, Ga., Walter is based out of Con-way Freight’s Savannah, Ga., service center. He has been married for 24 years to his wife, Renee, and has two children: Wesley and Quortney; and two grandchildren: Karlie, 9; and Payton, 6. His hobbies include deer hunting.
