Terry McGechieCon-way Freight DSR Terry McGechie started working around trucks when he was 24 years old. He went to work with his stepfather at a local company loading and moving trucks around the terminal’s lot. When the owner of the company asked if he would be interested in getting his CDL, Terry jumped at the chance. He has enjoyed being a professional truck driver ever since.
“I have always liked being my own boss while I am on the road,” Terry said. “You are given your pickups for the day from dispatch, but then it is up to you to be your own planner and decide the most efficient route. It’s great to have that independence and freedom.”
He credits his success in reaching two million accident-free miles with always having a plan while driving and anticipating what the other drivers around him are going to do.
“Whether I am backing into a driveway or pulling up to a dock, I always have a plan,” he said. “You have to stay aware of your surroundings; it’s not always just about what you can see. Sometimes what you hear is just as important, when it comes to avoiding an accident.”
To stay safe on the road, Terry advises other drivers not to lose of the big picture by focusing too much on small distractions and to always make sure to check that equipment is in proper working condition. Rushing can cause accidents that could otherwise be prevented.
When asked how he reached two million miles without an accident, Terry answered, “I always take it one day, one hour at a time. Every time I get behind the wheel of my truck, it is my job to keep the general public and myself safe so that everyone can make it home to be with their family and loved ones.”
A resident of Buena Park, Calif., Terry is based out of Con-way Freight’s Orange, Calif., service center. He has been married for 20 years to his wife, Carla, and has three children: Lisa, Josh and Amber; and two grandchildren: Kayle and Mikayla. In his spare time, Terry enjoys working out, riding motorcycles and spending time with his grandchildren.
