Marty CollierIt was with a little help from his family that Driver Sales Representative Marty Collier found his ideal occupation as a professional truck driver. He began his career as a dock worker, but soon discovered that what he really wanted to do was get behind the wheel.
“It was 1987 when I got my first job in the trucking industry,” Marty said. “I was looking for employment and some relatives were able to get me a position on the docks at the company they were working for. After awhile I was given the opportunity to drive and I knew that I had found the right job.”
Marty attributes part of his success in achieving two million accident-free miles to getting the proper amount of rest and staying physically active between shifts.
“The number one thing that will keep you out of accidents is staying focused on the task at hand; driving,” he explained. “The best way to do that is by making sure that you get the proper amount of rest so that you can be fully alert. I also think that eating right and staying physically active has allowed me to perform at my best. I jog three or four miles in the morning before going to work, it helps me feel prepared for the day.”
One thing that Marty believes would help keep everyone on the roads safer is if people would refrain from using electronic devices while behind the wheel.
“You see it all the time, people are texting, using iPhones, even laptops,” Marty added. “When you aren’t watching the road you won’t have time to react if something happens in front of you. Electronic distractions seem to be responsible for a lot of the accidents these days.”
When asked what this award means to him, Marty responded, “It really means a lot. I have achieved something that I never thought I would be able to. It feels great to be successful in reaching a goal that not many others have.”
A resident of Little Rock, Ark., Marty is based out of Con-way Freight’s Memphis service center. He has been married for 17 years to his wife, Kim, and has four children: Shaquandra, Marty Jr., Larnia and Keely; and two grandchildren: Tyler and Miles. In his spare time, Marty enjoys running.
