Washington Trucking Associations Selects John Wasiuk for His More than Two-Decade Contribution to Safe Driving on the State's Roadways
ANN ARBOR, Mich., and SEATTLE - August 16, 2010
Con-way Freight, a less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier and subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), today announced that one of its driver sales representatives has been named 2010 Washington Driver of the Year by Washington Trucking Associations (WTA). John Wasiuk received the award at WTA’s Common Carrier Conference and was honored by the organization at its annual “Day with the Winners” event held at Emerald Downs racetrack on July 31.
“John Wasiuk upholds all of the values we seek in our Driver of the Year and is held in high regard by the state of Washington, his employer, Con-way Freight, and the Washington State Patrol,” said Mike Southards, director of safety, Washington Trucking Associations. “He’s a perfect ambassador for the driver community and their commitment to safety, and WTA is proud to recognize him for his contributions over the years.”
WTA drivers are nominated by their employers and subsequently evaluated by the Washington State Patrol, one of many city, county, state and federal agencies WTA works with to better serve the trucking community. Selection criteria for the award includes years of experience in the industry, miles driven, preventable accidents, moving violations and community involvement. Wasiuk has driven more than one million miles during his career with no recordable accidents.
“With his stellar safety profile and years of experience driving — the bulk of which over Washington state’s roadways — it’s wonderful that WTA is applauding his achievements,” said John G. Labrie, president, Con-way Freight. “We congratulate John on his efforts to provide our customers with superior customer service, while living out our values of Safety, Integrity, Commitment and Excellence.”
Wasiuk is based at Con-way Freight’s Seattle service center and has been a professional truck driver for more than 25 years. He began his career in the transportation industry in California in 1979 and obtained his commercial driver’s license in 1986 before relocating to Washington state. There he worked for several freight carriers before joining Con-way Freight in 1995. Wasiuk ran linehaul for Con-way Freight for two years, before becoming a pickup and delivery driver for the company in the Seattle area. A resident of Auburn, Wash., he is married and has two children.
