In his new position, he becomes the company’s chief procurement officer, overseeing the design, development and implementation of specifications and purchasing programs for all supplier goods and revenue equipment to meet the operating, fleet resource, freight handling and terminal network needs of CNF’s operating companies in transportation, logistics and supply chain management services.
He succeeds CNF Vice President of Purchasing D. Wayne Byerley Jr., who served as the company’s top purchasing executive for more than 15 years, and has announced his retirement following a distinguished 37-year career with the company.
“Mitch Plaat has consistently demonstrated skill and expertise managing diverse and complex purchasing activities for the organization,” noted Byerley. “This promotion recognizes those contributions and our confidence in the strong management direction Mitch will bring to this important corporate responsibility.”
Mr. Plaat joined the CNF organization in 1989 as a manager of materials purchasing. In 1993, he was promoted to operations manager, contract services where he was responsible for supply and materials purchasing, and warehouse and mail operations.
In 1999, he was promoted to director of contract services, responsible for the management and procurement of indirect spend for CNF and its subsidiaries.

He will remain based at CNF’s administrative and technology center in Portland, OR and will report to John Labrie, vice president of CNF, and president of Con-Way Supply Chain Services. “We’re very pleased to have Mitch leading our procurement operations,” said Labrie. “His experience and insight will be highly valuable as we continue to refine and improve purchasing practices and spend management.”
