Local Company-Sponsored Team Demonstrates Creativity, Dedication and Community Spirit in Annual Sandcastle Building Competition to Raise Money for Kids on the Block Educational Program
Portland, Ore. - July 18, 2007
A team of employees from Con-way Inc.’s Portland campus landed top honors at this year’s Sand in the City event, winning the “Golden Shovel” award for their intricate rendition of “Campfire Tails,” a sand sculpture portraying movie animals and other characters reading “kiddie tales” around a campfire. The event was held last weekend in downtown Portland’s Pioneer Square.

The Con-way team consisted of approximately 30 employees from throughout the company’s Portland operations who, in conjunction with design partner LRS Architects, designed and built the first-place entry. In addition to receiving the top award from the event’s judges, the Con-way sculpture also won the “People’s Choice” award voted on by event attendees over the weekend. The company underwrote the team’s entry fee as a major sponsor of the competition.
Yoshida’s Sand in the City is the primary fundraiser and community outreach opportunity for Kids on the Block, an educational program in Portland, Ore., that uses the power of puppetry to help children understand and accept differences in one another and learn skills to stay safe and healthy.
“This was a great event for the Portland community as well as our employees,” said Craig Boretz, vice president, development for Con-way. “Our team truly demonstrated the community spirit we have in Portland while exemplifying our core values of collaboration, integrity, commitment and excellence. We’re very proud to congratulate our team on bringing home first-place honors for Con-way.”
Con-way’s captain for the Sand in the City team was Pam Johnson, a senior internal auditor in the company’s Information Technology group. “It was a challenge but we had a great design and a dedicated team that had fun every step of the way — even in the heat,” said Johnson. “It’s a great feeling to be able to participate in an event that provides such important benefits to our city. Our team showed tremendous commitment and that came through in the final product.”
Con-way is an active participant in and supporter of the communities in which it operates throughout the United States and abroad.
