Contest is Industry's Top Event
ANN ARBOR, MI - June 28, 2006
Con-way Freight driver sales representative, Emilio Cavazos achieved top honors at the recent California State Truck Driving Championships placing first in the 3-axle equipment class.
Cavazos will now go on to the next level where he will compete in the American Trucking Association’s 2006 National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC) August 16 through August 20. Con-way Freight is the regional less-than-truckload (LTL) subsidiary of Con-way Inc.
In August, Cavazos and wife, Esther, will travel to New Orleans, La. at company expense, where he will represent both the state and Con-way Freight at the industry’s most prestigious challenge.
Cavazos, a 31-year veteran of the trucking industry, has driven more than 2.7-million accident-free miles in his career. He has been a Con-way Freight driver sales representative since 1993 and works out of the Fresno service center. This will be his second trip to the NTDC representing Con-way; he previously competed in 2000 and 1987.
“The state and national competitions showcase the best professional drivers from across the country,” said David S. McClimon, president of Con-way Freight. “Being a top-ranked professional driver is considered as great an honor as having a superior safety record within our organization. Emilio is an outstanding representative of Con-way’s safety-conscious professionals. We are proud to have Emilio on our team and wish him the best of luck. We’ll be cheering him on all the way through nationals.”
With a history dating back to 1937, the American Trucking Associations’ (ATA), National Truck Driving Championship focuses on highway safety, driver skills, professional knowledge, and safe vehicle operation. Hundreds of state champions from across the country will compete in eight equipment classes. One driver will win Grand Champion honors and receive a championship ring and trophy. The top three point earners in each of the eight competing classes will win the title of National Champion and receive a cash award and trophy, with the first place winner also receiving a national champion belt buckle.
Industry experts will evaluate competitors based on the results of a personal interview to test for overall knowledge of the trucking industry; a written examination to measure knowledge of safety practices, equipment and safety regulations; a pre-trip equipment safety inspection; and a driving test to determine the driver’s skill in maneuvering a tractor and trailer through a course specially constructed to test control and accuracy.
Con-way Freight is a subsidiary of San Mateo, California-based Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), a $4.2 billion management company of supply chain service providers with businesses in less-than-truckload motor carriage, truckload carriage, air freight, logistics and supply chain management, and trailer manufacturing.
