Company Honored for Automated Simulation Tool that Speeds Analysis of Network Changes
SAN MATEO, Calif. - June 01, 2009
Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) today announced that
IDG's CIO
magazine has named it one of the 2009 CIO 100. The 22nd annual award program
recognizes organizations around the world that exemplify the highest level of
operational and strategic excellence in information technology (IT). Con-way previously appeared on the CIO 100 list
in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008.
“This year's CIO 100 awards draw well-deserved attention to companies that are both innovating and creating business value with IT despite the economic downturn,” said Maryfran Johnson, editor in chief of CIO magazine & events. “These winners are an inspiration to businesses everywhere.”
Judges selected Con-way based on its Linehaul Simulation Project, the development and implementation of a simulation tool that facilitates quick and easy analysis of potential changes to the company’s linehaul freight distribution network. Without the tool, making changes to the network was a slow, imprecise and labor-intensive process. With Linehaul Simulation, analysts can quickly determine if network changes would be beneficial from a variety of perspectives. In 2008, load planners used the tool to complete a large-scale network reengineering project that now saves the company $30-40 million annually, while maintaining the previous freight throughput and customer service levels.
“Being named to the CIO 100 is a tremendous honor and a testament to the caliber of IT professionals we have on the Con-way team and their integration with the operation,” said Jacquelyn Barretta, Con-way’s chief information officer. “Using agile development processes, we were able to develop a tool that is not only driving operational efficiencies, but was also crucial to a major organizational initiative during challenging economic times.”
CIO editors chose this year’s award recipients following a three-step process starting with written applications reviewed by a team of judges. The 2009 CIO 100 awards will be presented at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Aug. 25 at the conclusion of the 11th annual CIO 100 Symposium® and Awards Ceremony.
