SAN MATEO, CA - Nov. 16, 2006 - Con-way Inc. announced today that it was named by InfoWorld magazine to the prestigious 2006 InfoWorld 100. Con-way was cited for its successful adoption and continued development of Service Oriented Architecture as the foundation for transformation of the company’s application infrastructure, which has improved business agility, IT operations efficiency and service.
“Our honorees prove that innovation starts with daring to embrace change,” the magazine said. “Fortune favors the bold, as the winners of this year’s honor have demonstrated time and again in their groundbreaking uses of technology to improve performance across their businesses.”
InfoWorld profiled Con-way’s foray into service oriented architecture in an article earlier this year titled “Lessons from an SOA Pioneer.” In the article, the magazine wrote:
“Con-way stands out as an ambitious, successful reinvention of one enterprise's application infrastructure.” The company’s initiative “also demonstrated how the key to successful SOA deployment is to focus on the business processes that are the heart of the services, rather than on specific technology platforms.”
“As technologies change and mature, we are constantly challenged to adapt and employ new applications that have promise for improving our business,” said Jackie Barretta, Con-way’s vice president and CIO. “What we have found with SOA is that as our deployment has evolved, it has helped insulate the company from the disruptive effects of new technologies while accelerating the benefits. We’re thrilled to be honored by InfoWorld for one of the top technology accomplishments in business for 2006.”
Barretta added that the company is utilizing its Service Oriented Architecture approach across all three of its major business segments: Con-way Freight, which provides regional less-than-truckload transportation services throughout North America; Menlo Worldwide, providing global logistics and supply chain management services in North America and 20 countries worldwide; and Con-way Truckload Services, which provides direct, asset-based full-truckload freight transportation, freight brokerage services for both over-the-road and intermodal cargoes, and operates a trailer manufacturing business.
Con-way was one of two companies named to the industry category of Distribution/Supply Chain. Each year, InfoWorld recognizes the 100 companies that have used new technologies to solve business problems in innovative ways during the last 12 months. The magazine’s senior editorial team evaluated over 250 nominations for the 2006 campaign. The honorees include some of America’s most respected names in government, business and academia. Some winners were early adopters of leading-edge technologies to drive business improvement. Others have applied new technologies in ways revolutionary to old industries.
