Con-way Inc. Announces First Advanced Leadership Preparation Class Members
Advanced Leadership Preparation for Highest Achievement "ALPHA" Program Illustrates Company's Commitment to Intensive, Enterprise-Wide Employee Training
SAN MATEO, Calif. - November 12, 2007
Con-way Inc. (NYSE:CNW) today announced the first 10 members of its inaugural “ALPHA” — Advanced Leadership Preparation for Highest Achievement — training class.
“These 10 ALPHA candidates represent the next generation of leaders in this company,” said Douglas W. Stotlar, Con-way’s president and CEO. “Our people are our most valuable asset and rewarding their potential by developing business skills and leadership abilities is a top priority at Con-way. Their success strengthens the company and enhances our competitive advantage in the marketplace.”
The three-year curriculum is designed to ensure that future company leaders are prepared to take on increasing responsibility as they progress through their Con-way careers. The $4.7 billion freight transportation and logistics services company created the program as part of its Con-way Leadership Academy, launched earlier this year. ALPHA participants are nominated by their business units and selected by CEO Stotlar and his executive committee.
2007 ALPHA program members are:

- Jeff Rivera — director of operations, Menlo Worldwide Logistics, Auburn Hills, Mich.
- Praveen Sharabu — director of enterprise architecture/infrastructure, Con-way Enterprise Services, Portland, Ore.
- Steve Smigielski — region manager, Con-way Freight, Braintree, Mass.
- Wayne Waggoner — region manager, Con-way Freight, Dallas, Texas
The Con-way Leadership Academy provides education and training across a wide spectrum of functional and leadership roles, spanning operations, sales and management. The academy has four layers of skills development emphasis: position fundamentals, leadership fundamentals, strategic leadership/advanced leadership preparation for highest achievement (ALPHA), and executive education.
