ANN ARBOR, Mich. - November 12, 2008
The American Red Cross of Washtenaw County received a contribution from Ann Arbor-based Con-way Freight, the less-than-truckload operating unit for Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), and its employees of more than $21,000 for Hurricane Ike relief efforts in the Houston area.
Con-way Freight matched the donations raised by its employees bringing the total contribution to $21,191, doubling the funds already raised by the Washtenaw County Chapter for victims of Hurricane Ike’s devastation earlier this year.
“The Red Cross is so grateful for the generosity shown by Con-way Freight's employees,” said Donna Duvin, executive director of the Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Red Cross. “The Washtenaw Red Cross is proud to submit this gift to help replenish the National Disaster Fund. We hope Con-way Freight's leadership and generosity inspires others in our county to follow their example. This funding means so much to all of our neighbors across the country who have experienced disasters this year, but especially to the residents of Houston who are still putting their lives back together after the destruction left by Hurricane Ike.”
“Houston is a major market for us where we have several hundred employees and thousands of customers,” said John Labrie, president of Con-way Freight. “While we originally thought of collecting donations of food, clothing and supplies, we quickly came to the realization that financial support for the American Red Cross was the best way to help these communities start to rebuild their lives.”
“We’re pleased to match the generosity our employees demonstrated and provide this necessary support for those who are recovering in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike,” he added.
