ANN ARBOR, MI - Oct. 31, 2006 - Con-way Freight (CWF), the less-than-truckload operating company of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) has been recognized for its safety performance, individual employee achievements and contributions to the trucking industry. The honors came at the annual Management Conference and Exhibition of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) held earlier this week in Dallas, TX.
Con-way Freight–Southern (formerly Con-Way Southern Express) received the ATA’s President’s Trophy in the over 100 Million Miles Driven category for its five-year safety record, safety program and promotion of safety to employees. The honor recognizes the company as having the safest trucking fleet of its size in America. Phil Worthington, president of the company accepted the award. The company won the same honor in 2002. The company also won a first place safety award in the Less-than-Truckload Local Over 100 Million Miles Driven category.
Douglas W. Stotlar, president and chief executive officer of CWF’s parent company, Con-way Inc. was recognized by the ATA’s Executive Committee with an award for his and Con-way Freight’s contributions to the success of the ATA’s advocacy programs. The committee cited the company’s contribution of a one-day educational meeting at a Con-way Freight facility that was designed for the Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
In the opening general session of the conference Governor Bill Graves, president and chief executive officer of the ATA and Richard Howard, vice president of DaimlerChrysler Truck Financial presented Dave McClimon, president of Con-way Freight the Highway Watch Award of Distinction for the company’s high level of participation in the program. McClimon accepted the award on behalf of Con-way’s 21,000 employees. “Security and safety are two driving values of our organization. Every Con-way Freight employee deserves part of this award for their efforts everyday,” said McClimon. Con-way Freight was the first national motor carrier to participate corporate wide in the program and currently has 10,000 Highway Watch trained employees. Highway Watch is a national safety and security program that utilizes the skills, experiences, and “road smarts” of America’s transportation workers to help prevent terrorists from using large vehicles or hazardous cargoes as weapons and to protect America’s critical highway transportation infrastructure. The program is administered by ATA under an agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The ATA’s Safety and Loss Prevention Management Council honored Robert Petrancosta, director of safety and environmental compliance for Con-way Freight with two awards. Petrancosta received the 2006 Leadership Award for his contributions to the council as a long time member, chairman of the Regulations Committee, service on the Hazardous Materials and Occupational Safety and Health Committees and his personal involvement in the National Truck Driving Championships. He also serves as the Council’s liaison to and active participant on the ATA’s Hazardous Materials Policy Subcommittee and Hours of Service Subcommittee. Petrancosta also received a special recognition award from the Hazardous Materials Policy Committee for a special one-day education initiative he created and implemented in May of this year for the benefit of the Department of Transportation’s Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
Three Con-way Freight driver sales representatives were also recognized by the associations. Dale Duncan, a Con-way Freight driver from Chula Vista, CA was recognized by Pat Quinn, ATA chairman as being the best truck driver in America. Duncan won ATA’s 2006 grand champion title at the associations’ national truck driving championships held in August. Con-way Freight drivers, David May from Cheektowaga, NY and Jeff Vermillion from Denver, CO. were honored at the opening general session by the associations for their contributions as ATA Road Team Captains during the past two years. Road Team captains serve a two year term as the trucking industry’s goodwill ambassadors and safety educators who travel across the country making safety presentations to the motoring public, news media, civic organizations, and legislative bodies.
Curt J. Shewchuk, director of corporate protective services for Con-way was elected National Chairman of the Safety, Security and Loss Prevention Management Council of the ATA. Earlier this year he was named ATA Security Professional of the Year. According to the ATA, the security professional of the year award is presented to the security professional who has demonstrated the ability to design, introduce and manage a successful security program that sets the bar for extraordinary performance. A 32-year law enforcement and security veteran, Shewchuk is responsible for the management of all worldwide security initiatives for all Con-way companies.
