Con-way Pledges $40,000 to Help Local Portland Community Center Pay Off Mortgage

Investment in Friendly House Community Center Will Improve Services for Children, Seniors and the Homeless

PORTLAND, Ore. - October 16, 2007

Delivering on a corporate commitment to help support and sustain the communities in which its employees live and work, local Portland employer Con-way announced today it will help the Friendly House Community Center pay off its mortgage by matching — dollar for dollar — funds raised by Friendly House, up to $40,000.

Friendly House, located in Northwest Portland, provides a variety of aid and support services aimed at helping children, seniors and homeless families in the neighborhood. The agency’s Community Center is one of five service programs offered at Friendly House and is located several blocks from Con-way’s 1,000-person campus, which houses the worldwide administrative and IT functions of the $4.7 billion freight transportation and logistics company.

Friendly House has already begun hosting a variety of fundraising activities in an effort to secure the match and hopes to pay off its mortgage by December. A mortgage-free Community Center is projected to return $26,000 to Friendly House’s annual cash flow — a huge boost that will enhance the agency’s ability to provide quality services to those who need it most.

“I am so pleased about our budding relationship with Con-way,” said Vaune Albanese, executive director, Friendly House Inc. “Friendly House is here for the community and needs the community’s support. Con-way is showing itself to be a wonderful neighbor. They have stepped up in a big way and we look forward to working with them on this campaign and long into the future.”

“Con-way recognizes the important role that Friendly House Community Center plays in our Northwest Portland neighborhoods,” said Craig Boretz, vice president of corporate development, Con-way. “As a responsible corporate citizen, we believe we can make a difference supporting area organizations that improve the welfare of our community, enrich the lives of Portland’s children and senior citizens, and provide opportunities for the disadvantaged. Joining in this initiative with Friendly House demonstrates our commitment to those ideals.”

Friendly House was founded in 1930 as a settlement house to help people rebuild their lives. In its eighth decade of service, Friendly House offers activities, programs and services for people of all ages and walks of life. With a neighbor-helping-neighbor approach, Friendly House’s programs serve more than 20,000 people every year, from birth to old age, and help people build skills, realize their potential and contribute to the vitality of Portland.
