American Trucking Associations (ATA) today announced that its 2008 National Driver of the Year is a Con-way Freight driver - David May of West Seneca, N.Y. May was selected for the nation's highest truck driving honor from a pool of 50 professionals nominated by the U.S. state trucking associations. He was publicly recognized at ATA's Safety and Loss Prevention Management Council's Fall Conference in Nashville, Tenn., over the weekend. Con-way Freight is a less-than-truckload (LTL) freight carrier and the largest subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW).
Con-way Freight President John G. Labrie released the following statement regarding May's selection:
"All of us at Con-way Freight were delighted to hear the news of David May's recognition. In the 11 years he has driven for the company, he has proven to be the consummate professional in every way. His dedication not only to the highest of safety standards but also to educating citizens and public officials on issues related to the safety of America's highways is unparalleled.
During his Con-way Freight career, David has driven more than 1.4 million accident-free miles and won three New York State Truck Driving Championships, and his contributions off the road are just as impressive. From 2005-2006, he served as a captain on ATA's America's Road Team, a group elected to represent the safety and professionalism of the nation's 3.2 million professional truck drivers in a variety of public outreach projects nationwide.
Following that, he was asked to go to Washington, D.C. to act as the driver representative on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) CDL (Commercial Driver's License) Advisory Committee, the group that advised FMCSA on licensure requirements for professional drivers. In addition, David frequently participates in ATA's Share the Road program, which conducts public presentations on how to drive safely in the vicinity of tractor-trailers.
I have always been proud of our team of talented professional truck drivers at Con-way Freight, and I have never been more proud than at this moment. I congratulate the very deserving David May and commend ATA on its ideal choice for this great honor."
