Driver Training Schools

Con-way Freight's Driver Training School can put you behind the wheel!

Thinking about a new career in the trucking industry? Here’s an opportunity you don’t want to miss. Con-way Freight now offers 12-week and accelerated four-week driver training programs at no cost to help you get behind the wheel and out on the open road.

History

In March 2010, Con-way Freight opened its first driver training schools. The program provides classroom and behind-the-wheel training, and is held at Con-way Freight facilities. Veteran Con-way senior drivers are the instructors, providing students with experienced classroom instruction, insight into the business, training on rules, regulations and procedures, and hands-on, behind-the-wheel supervised driving instruction using Con-way equipment. This training and education positions a candidate to successfully pass the Commercial Driver's License exam.

Con-way Freight started the driving schools in response to a persistent industry shortage of qualified drivers—which is expected to worsen. Studies estimate the trucking industry will face a shortage of 135,000 drivers during 2012.

Today, Con-way Freight operates 87 driver training schools across the country. All 87 locations support the 12-week program whereas the four-week accelerated program is offered at 64 locations. Class schedules are published regularly and are based on hiring needs.

Benefits

Con-way Freight’s 12-week Driver Training School program provides participants with:

  • 80 hours of classroom study
  • 160 supervised hours behind the wheel with a driver trainer
  • Opportunity to work part-time as a Con-way Freight dock worker and earn a wage while going to school
  • Training and education in a new career at no cost to the participant

Con-way Freight’s four-week accelerated program is a “finishing” program available to individuals who previously graduated from either a community-college sponsored driver training program, or a commercial driver-training school. The four-week program is intended for individuals who already have their Class A CDL, in addition to their hazardous materials and doubles/triples endorsements, but have limited “behind the wheel” experience. The finishing program also is available to military veterans who were assigned to a transportation unit and gained truck driving experience while in the military, and already have their Class A CDL.

Once students complete the program, graduate and pass their state license exam, they are promoted to full-time and given a driving assignment.

Requirements

To be eligible for the program, participants need to be 21 years or older, have a passion for the transportation industry and pass a drug screen and physical exam. Candidates are first hired as dock workers to gain an understanding of the freight business and insight into what it’s like to work for Con-way Freight.
