ExpressRate 2008 (version 13.0.1)

ExpressRate 2008 (version 13.0.1) is the latest version of Con-way Freight’s popular desktop rating application, and is available for download. Rates included in this version are effective January 28, 2008. This version includes all the enhancements introduced beginning with ExpressRate 2001, including full client/server functionality — install it once on a server and multiple workstations can use it.

Like always, it offers an easy-to-use graphical user interface, a full help system, Con-way Freight Service Center addresses and telephone numbers and Con-way Freight service standards. It’s compact, efficient and useful on a majority of computer systems and will run on Microsoft Windows 98, 2000, NT 4.0 and XP. You will download a zipped file named er2008.zip, which, when unzipped, will create the installation and setup utility for ExpressRate 2008. Please note the folder to which you save er2008.zip. When you are ready to install ExpressRate 2008, double-click er2008.zip. This will unzip a file named setup.exe which, when double-clicked, will launch the installation facility. Follow the prompts to install ExpressRate 2008.

Operating Instructions

Starting the Program

Double-click the ExpressRate icon. The program starts at the main user interface.

Rating a Shipment

Enter an origin and destination for each shipment. You can use either a U.S. ZIP Code or a Canadian postal code, or city names. If you use a ZIP or postal code, enter the full code. City names, however, require only the city name, not the state or province. When there is a duplicate city name in both the U.S. and Canada, ExpressRate will present you with a list of choices. Once both a valid origin and destination have been entered, the standard transit time will appear on the screen.

Enter a weight value for each commodity being shipped, and type or select the National Motor Freight Class for the commodity. Shipments moving within Canada require you to enter the density, in pounds per cubic foot, in lieu of an NMFC class. Similarly, shipments destined for Hawaii or Puerto Rico call for an additional data item: volume in cubic feet. For any lane, up to five separate items, each having a separate class, can be entered for a single shipment. When you are finished entering the shipment, click the hypertext at the bottom of the page and the shipment will be rated.

The rated shipment will appear on the screen with full detail of origin, destination, weight, class, rate, extended charges, discount and net charges. At the left of this page are tools that allow you to: 1) print the bill, 2) add accessorial charges to the bill, 3) display the charges in Canadian dollars, 4) display the entire rate table (all classes, all weight brackets) between the origin and destination of the bill, or 5) jump to the Discounts page. If you want to simply revise the discount that applies to this individual bill, click the discount showing on the screen and you can enter a new discount, click Enter and the bill will be recalculated using the new discount.

Customization Options and Supplemental Tools

The left side of the main user interface page features a number of tools that can be used to customize or extend ExpressRate. They are:

Bill of Lading Management System

ExpressRate now includes a utility for creating, storing and printing bills of lading. For purposes of this system, a bill of lading has the following components:

Parties — A bill has at least two, and sometimes three, parties to it, in different roles. There is always a shipper and a consignee, and often a bill-to party. ExpressRate provides a utility for maintaining a file of parties to a bill of lading. Use it (by clicking B/L Parties on the Bill of Lading System interface) to add, delete or modify companies or individuals that will be listed on your bills. Then you will be able to choose parties for each role on the bill simply by picking them from a drop-down list on the main interface.

Commodities — are the goods shipped on a bill of lading, and ExpressRate gives you a utility to maintain a file of the commodities you ship. Again, use this file to create a drop-down list for the main interface that makes adding commodities to a bill a matter of just a couple of clicks.

Bills of Lading — Create bills via the main interface for the B/L System. Give the bill a number of your choosing, add a date, and enter a valid Con-way PRO number. Choose a shipper, consignee and bill-to (if applicable) party. Add commodities (up to five) from the drop-down list(s).

You can customize this utility in several ways. If you wish, you can show freight charges on the bill. And if you do, you can use any discount level you choose, or use your Con-way discount. Lastly, you can print up to 99 copies of each bill.

Rate Sheets — produces printed rate sheets for Canadian lanes
