President of Con-way Freight Inc. and Executive Vice President, Con-way Inc.
W. Gregory "Greg" Lehmkuhl is president of Con-way Freight Inc., the regional and national less-than-truckload (LTL) motor carrier and largest subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE:CNW), and an executive vice president of the parent company. Con-way Inc. is a $5.5 billion diversified freight transportation and logistics services firm headquartered in Ann Arbor, Mich. Con-way delivers industry-leading services through its primary operating companies of Con-way Freight, Menlo Worldwide Logistics and Con-way Truckload. These operating units provide high-performance, day-definite less-than-truckload (LTL), full truckload and multimodal freight transportation; as well as logistics, warehousing and supply chain management services. Con-way also operates Con-way Manufacturing, a trailer refurbishing and manufacturing company which supplies trailing equipment to the company’s trucking fleets. Con-way Inc. and its subsidiaries operate from more than 425 locations across North America and in 20 countries across five continents.
As Con way Freight's President, Mr. Lehmkuhl is responsible for overall company operating and financial performance, strategic planning and business plan development, and direction of the company’s continuous improvement processes. He also plays a direct role in change management, employee engagement and leadership development activities designed to enhance the company’s operating performance and competitive advantage, as well as the end-to-end customer experience.
He was previously executive vice president of operations for Con-way Freight. As the company’s senior operating executive, he was responsible for planning and execution of Con-way Freight's fleet and service center network operations encompassing 300 service centers and 35,000 trucks, tractors and trailers; service quality and consistency, ongoing process design and analysis, network configuration, production efficiency and strategic improvement/cost reduction initiatives.
Mr. Lehmkuhl joined Con-way Freight in August 2008 from sister company Menlo Worldwide Logistics. As vice president of Menlo's Automotive Industry Group, he oversaw global strategic development, solution engineering and implementation, sales, operations, pricing, customer service and account management. Over a eight-year tenure, he directed this group's growth from start-up to over 1,000 employees serving a diverse group of automotive manufacturing and supplier customers with logistics and transportation management operations across the United States and 13 countries worldwide. He also was instrumental in Menlo's adoption of Lean methodologies for continuous improvement, since 2003 leading the design and transformation at Menlo of customer and employee engagement programs to adopt Lean operating processes and practices.
Before joining Menlo in 2001 as director of operations, Mr. Lehmkuhl worked in global logistics and operations management with Delphi Automotive Systems. For Delphi, he managed transportation, warehousing and customs brokerage for a $13 billion manufacturing operation spanning 65 plants in 26 countries. Prior to Delphi he worked for Penske Logistics, where he launched one of Penske's first automotive lean logistics operations, and later was a line manager in engineering and logistics planning for the company's largest automotive customer.
He is a graduate of Michigan State University, East Lansing, Mich., where he earned a bachelor's degree in business with emphasis on materials and logistics management. He subsequently earned his MBA from Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.
Mr. Lehmkuhl also is a 2004 recipient of the prestigious Raymond F. O'Brien Award of Excellence, an honor conferred upon exceptional employees by the then-CNF organization for leadership and professional accomplishment. Today, the tradition of the O'Brien award is carried on in the Con-way organization as the Con-way CEO Constellation Award.
He is based at Con-way Freight's headquarters in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
